English

  • Read LGBT+ authors

  • Teach and allow the singular use of they/them. (It is in most major dictionaries now and is not 'grammatically incorrect')

  • Acknowledge authors who are widely speculated to be LGBT+ (IE: Many of Shakespeare's sonnets were written to another man, certain scenes in the Great Gatsby that indicate Nick was LGBT, etc.,)

Social Studies

  • Talk about LGBT historical figures (Harvey Milk, Bayard Rustin, Lili Albe, Alan Turing, Frida Kahlo, Sylvia Rivera, Eleanor Roosevelt, etc.,)

  • Integrate LGBT issues into your curriculum. Don't just have a single day or unit devoted to it.

  • Acknowledge that many more historical figures (statistically speaking) may have been LGBT+ but were never given the opportunity to come out safely or live as their authentic self

Math

  • Include LGBT+ couples and people in your word problems.

  • Check out this handy link:

Art

  • Teach about LGBT+ artists

  • Display art with LGBT+ themes

Science

  • Teach about intersex during biology units (what it is, how common it is, some of the problems the intersex community faces)

  • Avoid gendering bodies or genitalia. Instead of 'male' genitalia, use external genitalia or reproductive structures. Instead of 'female' use internal genitalia or reproductive structures. Or just refer to the structure by name.

  • Teach about the diversity of reproductive behaviors among animal species

  • Include LGBT+ scientists in your curriculum

Health

  • See 'Science' section about gendering bodies

  • Degender sexual acts. IE: "when two people with vaginas have sex" rather than "when two women have sex"

  • Teach about the LGBT+ acronym

  • Discuss the difference between romantic and sexual attraction

  • Teach that not everyone experiences romantic or sexual attraction and that's completely normal

  • Check out this website for specific curriculum: Chttps://www.lgbthealtheducation.org/
